Catalytic converters and sensors in the exhaust system can become coated with carbon-based residue from uncombusted gasoline (petrol) and blow-by of lubricating oil if the converter and sensors do not reach a high enough operating temperature. The effects are increased tailpipe emissions and fuel consumption due to improper long term fuel trim.
